Nyungne is a special practice of the thousand-armed Chenrezig. It is a retreat of body, speech and mind, which lasts two and a half days. Nyungne combines a commitment to fasting and silence, with prostrations or circumambulations (as your physical condition allows). This year we are offering this opportunity to participate both online and at the center.
On Monday evening, Lama Kalsang will give us instructions on how to observe the Eight Mahayana Precepts during the retreat. Participants will observe the Eight Precepts beginning on Tuesday morning and ending Thursday morning, practicing meditation, visualization, and mantra of the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig at each session.
For participants, fasting will begin after lunch on Tuesday, with no food until conclusion on Thursday morning. Tea and liquids are permitted until Wednesday morning, Saga Dawa Duchen, which will also be a day of silence.
Participants may also do a Nyingne practice which entails taking the 8 Mahayana Precepts Vow, not eating after lunch and observing silence. Water can be consumed as needed.

During this phase of reopening, attendance at the center is limited to 5 people. To attend just send an email to TRTCC@threeriverstibetancc.org at least 24 hours before the practice, and we’ll let you know if there is still space. Only people who are fully vaccinated can attend practices in person.

His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche is offering the Bodhisattva Vow on his 85th birthday early tomorrow morning. Rinpoche is a very high master in the Drikung Kagyu lineage and among the last generation of masters trained in Tibet. This is a very precious opportunity to receive this vow from one of our greatest living masters.
The Garchen Institute website explains the vow this way:
“The Bodhisattva Vow can only be taken after you have taken the Refuge Vow. This vow represents our commitment to the altruistic intent; to the courageous heart which places others before self and seeks enlightenment to benefit all sentient beings. In taking this vow, we commit to love and compassion as our path.”

Sunday practice is going to involve a team of practitioners to participate in the practice with lama by taking turns to read the English text.
We will bring back the Introduction to Practice class. This six-week class offers an introduction to the opening prayers and provides a foundation for the center’s regular practices. Each session will also include a period of meditation and basic instruction.
Saturday practice, Basic Buddhism: Practice and Study will be on spring break starting March 27th through the month of April. We encourage you to join Ven. Khenchen Konchog Gyaltsen Rinpoche‘s online teachings on Saturday morning. Khenchen founded TRTCC and was our first spiritual director. His teachings are not on a beginning level, but listening to teachings from an authentic master can bring down a shower of blessings on any mind that is open to it. We had sent a notice of these teachings with a Zoom link in an earlier email. For more information on Khenchen Rinpoche’s teachings please click here.
We have been looking farther ahead to when the center will be able to open again. We will first get Lama vaccinated and then figure out when and how we can, with benefit to all people involved, safely begin to reopen the center.
Thank you for all your supports during this difficult time.
